Mardin - Kasımiye Madrasa - Grand Mosque - Abbars - PTT Building - Mesopotamia Plain - Deyr-Ul Zafaran - Harran Plain - Mound - Harran Guesthouse
Dear guests; after breakfast at our hotel in the morning, we proceed with our tour of the Ancient City of Dara, planned as an optional extra activity with those who wish to join. Located 30 km southeast of Mardin, within the boundaries of Oğuz Village, this ancient city is considered one of the most important settlements of Upper Mesopotamia. We explore Dara, which has a fascinating atmosphere with its rock-carved structures and remains spread over a wide area, accompanied by our guide’s explanations. After our ancient city visit, we head toward Mardin, the meeting point of religions and languages. Our first stop in Old Mardin, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List with its narrow streets adorned with unique examples of stone craftsmanship and its protected urban fabric, will be Kasımiye Madrasa. As you listen to the story of the fountain called selsebil in the madrasa courtyard from our guide, you will be captivated by the cooling effect of this architectural marvel. After having our lunch with local flavors, we set off on a walk through the historical streets toward the Grand Mosque. While examining the poetic architecture and elegant minaret of Cami-i Kebir, the largest mosque in Mardin, we observe the traditional life that still continues in the city’s streets: cleaning supplies carried by donkeys, the mysterious abbaras (tunnel passages) under the houses, and the colorful texture of the bazaars… During our walk, we also see Şehidiye Madrasa and the historic PTT Building, and we take a tea and coffee break accompanied by the magnificent view of the Mesopotamia Plain. After resting, we go to Deyr-ul Zafaran Monastery, which housed the Syriac Patriarchate for more than 1000 years. Here, we visit structures such as the 4000-year-old Sun Temple (Temple of Sin), infirmary, church, and baptistery, witnessing the traces of an ancient civilization. After leaving Mardin, we turn our route to Harran, where the world’s first university was founded. What to bring with you?
👕 Clothing and Footwear
- Comfortable Walking Shoes: Since there will be all-day walking in uneven and historic areas such as Göbeklitepe, Dara Ancient City, Mount Nemrut, or Mardin's narrow cobblestone streets, this is the most critical item.
- Layered Clothing: It can be very hot during the day in the region, while evenings and early mornings can be quite cool. Cardigans, fleece, vests, or light jackets that can be easily put on and taken off (especially warm clothing for Nemrut sunrise/sunset) are lifesavers.
- Shawl or Scarf: Since female guests will need to cover their heads or shoulders during visits to religious and historical sites such as Balıklıgöl and the Grand Mosque, a practical shawl should definitely be kept in the bag.
- Sun Protection: The sun in the region can be quite intense. A wide-brimmed hat, high-factor sunscreen, and a good pair of sunglasses should not be neglected.
🎒 Daily Use and Practical Items
- Small Backpack: When getting off the tour bus, an ergonomic bag is essential for carrying water, a wallet, a charger, and a shawl during daily excursions.
- Thermos or Water Bottle: Since continuous water consumption is necessary in the summer or on hot days, a thermos that keeps water cool is very useful.
- Cash: It is a good idea to carry some cash, especially for small purchases and tastings in local markets, historic bazaars (for example, Gaziantep Coppersmiths Bazaar), or spice shops.
🔋 Electronics
- Portable Charger (Powerbank): Since there will be plenty of photos and videos taken in Mesopotamian landscapes, phone batteries will run out very quickly.
- Phone Storage: Clearing space on devices for photos and videos or backing them up before setting off makes things easier for guests.
💊 Health and Personal Care
- Stomach and Digestive Medicines: The region's wonderful cuisine, rich in spices, tomato paste, and meat, may cause minor sensitivities in those who are not used to it. Simple stomach protectors or probiotics may be helpful.
- Regularly Used Medications: Since there will be movement throughout the day, it is important to keep personal prescription medications in the day bag rather than in the bus luggage compartment.
