GÖLYAZI :
Gölyazı is one of Bursa’s richest ancient settlements. Established on a deep peninsula, Gölyazı’s history dates back to the 6th century B.C. According to information obtained from written sources, Gölyazı’s ancient name is “Apollonia ad Rhyndacum,” derived from the ancient Rhyndacus River, today called the Orhaneli Stream (Kocaçay). Apollonia was the god of light in ancient times. It is known that there were nine cities named “Apollonia” established in Anatolia in antiquity. Sources state that this name was given in reference to the river called Rhyndacus, which emerges from the area around Aizonai (Çavdarhisar), feeding Lake Apolyont (Uluabat), in order to distinguish it from other cities.
